INTRODUCTION

Indonesia, which is often likened to an equatorial emerald, not only displays extraordinary natural beauty but also has a wealth of culture and local wisdom that is very valuable (Yunus, 2011). One example is South Kalimantan, a jewel among other islands with unique traditions and ancestral knowledge. Indonesia's natural beauty and cultural diversity are national assets and world heritage that must be preserved (Situmorang & Nst, 2023). Therefore, efforts to preserve nature and culture must be carried out sustainably by involving all elements of society and supported by appropriate government policies.

Local wisdom refers to the positive behaviour of humans in interacting with nature and the surrounding environment, which comes from religious values, customs, ancestral advice, or local culture, which are naturally formed in the community to adapt to their environment (Aminudin, 2013). The concept of local wisdom includes all forms of knowledge, beliefs, understandings, or insights, as well as customs or ethics that guide human behaviour in the life of an ecological community (Sinapoy, 2018). These forms of local wisdom are lived, practised, taught, and inherited from generation to generation, thus forming patterns of human behaviour towards others (Odorlina, 2015).

Tampakang Village, located in Paminggir District, North Hulu Sungai Regency, South Kalimantan, is a concrete example of how local wisdom can be integrated with elements of modernity to achieve sustainable development. A vast swamp surrounds this village and is a habitat for various unique fauna. One of the fauna characteristic of the village is the swamp buffalo, which is an integral part of the life of the local community. The swamp buffalo, known as the Kalimantan bull (Bubalus bubalis) (Widaningsih et al., 2023), is a species that lives in swamps and grasslands around swamps. These animals play an important role in maintaining the balance of the swamp ecosystem and become the main source of livelihood for the local community (Adekola & Mitchell, 2011).

Swamp buffalo cultivation in Tampakang Village is a local tradition, a model of nature conservation, and a sustainable source of livelihood for the local community (Sari & Abdullah, 2020). The people of Tampakang Village traditionally raise swamp buffaloes by utilizing the natural resources available around them. Buffaloes are grazed in swamps, fed with grass and aquatic plants, and allowed to soak freely in swamps. Swamp buffalo provide various benefits for the people of Tampakang Village (Erlina et al., 2022). One of them is buffalo meat, that the surrounding community can consume (Permata et al., 2018). And buffaloes can be sold at certain moments, such as during sacrificial feasts, weddings, and Isra Mi'raj.

In the current modernization era, Tampakang Village not only maintains local wisdom in swamp buffalo cultivation but also takes advantage of new opportunities by developing swamp buffalo tourism as an additional source of income for the community. Tourists from various regions now visit this village to enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience (Juliana et al., 2023). Tourists can observe swamp buffaloes roaming freely on a large swampland. The dashing view of the swamp buffalo, combined with the beautiful and soothing natural panorama of the swamp, is the main attraction of this tour. Tourists can also feel close to nature and swamp buffaloes and learn about the importance of preserving these animals and their habitats.

Based on the description above, this journal aims to discuss how swamp buffalo cultivation in Tampakang Village is an effective model for bridging local wisdom and modernity. This journal will explore aspects such as Local wisdom in swamp buffalo cultivation, the role of swamp buffalo in nature conservation, swamp buffalo cultivation as a source of livelihood, the challenges faced in preserving swamp buffalo cultivation and opportunities to increase its potential as a sustainable community welfare.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This research was carried out in May 2024 in Tampagang Village, Paminggir District, North Hulu Sungai Regency, South Kalimantan Province. The informants in this study are swamp buffalo livestock owners and Tampakang villagers who are considered able to explain swamp buffalo cultivation. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive analysis approach. Data collection techniques and instruments are carried out through field observations, interviews, documentation and literature studies. Primary data collection was carried out through individual and group interviews. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with community leaders in Tampakang Village and its surroundings to analyze the research findings further.

Meanwhile, secondary data is obtained by studying documents and libraries from various interrelated sources, such as journals and scientific articles. It then compares the data obtained with other relevant theories, literature, and research to ensure validity. Finally, the results of this study will be presented in the form of a scientific journal explaining the main conclusions, practical implications, and development recommendations for preserving swamp buffalo cultivation to increase its potential as a sustainable community welfare.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Local Wisdom of Swamp Buffalo Cultivation

The swamp buffalo is a type of buffalo native to Southeast Asia that has an important role in maintaining the environmental ecosystem. Swamp buffalo cultivation has traditionally been carried out in several regions of Indonesia, such as Tampadang Village and South Kalimantan. The existence of swamp buffaloes in residents' daily lives is a symbol of the uniqueness and authenticity of local culture that is difficult to find elsewhere. Swamp buffalo as a tourist attraction allows tourists to witness firsthand the traditional activities of the community, such as grazing methods. Farmers release herds of swamp buffalo from their cages and let them forage and soak freely in the swamp waters since morning, and before dusk, the swamp buffalo will return to the cage or ward.

Swamp buffalo tourism offers a unique experience and can also be a means of local cultural education. Before becoming a tourist attraction, the local community was very familiar with swamp buffaloes, and villagers often played with buffaloes by riding them. This has become a hereditary tradition that is fun and teaches responsibility and how to take care of buffaloes. Tourists can now see and experience directly interacting with swamp buffaloes. Tourist interactions with swamp buffaloes, such as feeding and bathing them. Not only does it provide an unforgettable tourist experience, but it also fosters a sense of love and responsibility for preserving this species. This activity supports the survival of swamp buffaloes and reflects the harmony between humans and nature.

The Role of Swamp Buffalo in Nature Conservation

In line with ecotourism, swamp buffalo is a means to raise awareness of the importance of nature conservation. Inviting tourists to preserve the environment allows local communities to gain economic benefits without damaging the environment. Swamp buffalo has become an inseparable part of the local ecosystem and culture. Through ecotourism, tourists are invited to participate in preserving the environment while enjoying an authentic tourism experience. The role of swamp buffalo in nature conservation is very significant and multifunctional. Swamp buffaloes, which live in vast swamp areas, are important in maintaining environmental balance, especially wetland ecosystems. They help maintain soil moisture by bringing water to the surface through their wide hooves so that the soil becomes more moist and can retain water better.

In addition, swamp buffalo can also improve soil quality by mixing manure and mud, which helps increase soil nutrient content. Swamp buffalo also plays a role in maintaining the fertility of agricultural land and aquatic biota. In the traditional grazing system, the farmer accumulates buffalo dung on the buffalo's back, then falls to the grazing ground. This dirt is scattered in the soil and soluble in water, helping to improve the quality of soil and aquatic biota. Swamp buffalo also help maintain environmental balance in natural ways, such as aiding soil aberration and controlling the growth of aquatic plants. Sustainable cultivation practices ensure that swamp ecosystems remain healthy and productive.

Swamp Buffalo Cultivation as a Source of Livelihood

Swamp buffalo cultivation has become an integral part of the social, economic, and cultural life of people in several regions of Indonesia, such as South Kalimantan and South Sumatra. Swamp buffalo is one of the sources of germplasm for ruminant cattle that have been bred and maintained for generations. They have a strategic role as meat producers, laborers, and a source of income for the community.

Life in Tampakang Village can still be considered very traditional, as seen from the dominant community, which works as buffalo breeders, swallow farmers, and fishermen. The swamp buffalo farming business is one of the reliable sources of profit for the surrounding community. In Tampakang village, buffalo are used for livestock breeding, which will then be sold at certain moments, such as during the feast of sacrifice, isra miraj, or weddings. "Buffalo is sold at IDR 15,000,000 for adult buffaloes and IDR 3,000,000 for young buffaloes, especially if the sale is during the sacrificial holiday.

Over time, swamp buffalo farmers develop their livestock as ecotourism objects. This certainly opens up new spirits and livelihood opportunities for the local community. Swamp buffalo is a part of life and a source of daily livelihood. By making swamp buffalo a tourist attraction, buffalo owners get additional income from tourists who see the buffaloes here. In addition, this ecotourism also brings economic benefits to the surrounding community. One is the Klotok boat transportation service, intended for tourists who want to see swamp buffaloes surrounding the waters Sambujur island. This creates new jobs for residents who provide boat rental services. Thus, not only buffalo owners benefit but also the community around Sambujur Island. By maintaining local wisdom and utilizing natural potential sustainably, the swamp buffalo is a symbol of cultural wealth and a sustainable source of income for the local community.

Challenges and Opportunities of Swamp Buffalo Cultivation as Sustainable Community Welfare.

The swamp buffalo manager urges visitors to comply with the rules and restrictions set to create the best experience for tourists and residents and maintain the sustainability of the places visited. They acknowledged the challenges, especially due to the differences in backgrounds between tourists and locals, which required a concerted effort to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining ethics and order.

Swamp buffaloes face various obstacles in their conservation efforts, including natural factors such as the rainy season. This season has an impact in the form of rising water levels, which results in grass as the main food source for buffaloes not being able to grow. This condition causes problems in providing enough feed for livestock. The solution that farmers usually take is only to provide existing feed, even though it is not ideal.

A training session to teach swamp buffalo farmers in Tampakang Village how to process feed was held by the livestock office from the Amuntai district. However, the challenge faced is the difficulty in finding grass that meets the required criteria. Farmers, who are still learning about the feed manufacturing process, are constrained by limited storage space, so they cannot produce large quantities of feed. When facing a food crisis situation, farmers often use leftover feed to reduce the portion of feed given so that the supply can last longer.

Here are the challenge points that can be seen as follows:

1)   Visitor awareness: It is necessary to foster visitor awareness to comply with rules and maintain ethics when travelling to cultivate swamp buffalo, such as not littering and not taking fruits without permission.

2)   Natural influences: The rainy season, which causes high tides and submersion of grassland, is the main obstacle to obtaining animal feed. This impacts the health and productivity of swamp buffaloes.

3)   Limited knowledge and skills: Swamp buffalo farmers generally have limited knowledge and skills when it comes to sustainable swamp buffalo cultivation. Previously, there had been training and direction to process animal feed from grass, but the obstacle was that it was difficult to find grass according to the category. As farmers, they are still not capable of making feed processes.

4)   Capital constraints: Swamp buffalo farmers generally have limited capital to invest in the infrastructure and technology needed to increase productivity. Like; cannot make large portions of feed because it does not have a warehouse as a storage place for backup feed. In the face of a food crisis, farmers usually circumvent it by feeding the remaining feed.

Here are the opportunities that can be seen as follows:

1)   Creating jobs: The development of swamp buffalo tourism can open job vacancies in various sectors, such as tour guides, cage keepers, security and cleaning officers, and food or souvenir sellers.

2)   Increase community income: Developing swamp buffalo tourism provides opportunities for the community to offer agro-tourism packages, such as riding swamp buffaloes, bathing swamp buffaloes, and learning how to milk swamp buffaloes.

3)   Improving community welfare: For example, in terms of public access to education and health. Improve the quality of village infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and electricity networks to be better. In addition, it can strengthen the identity of the local community as a local culture.

CONCLUSION

Swamp buffalo cultivation in Tampakang Village is a successful example of local wisdom that can be integrated with elements of modernity to achieve sustainable development. Local wisdom embodied in the tradition of swamp buffalo cultivation has an important role in nature conservation and provides economic benefits through ecotourism. The main challenges faced include the provision of feed during the rainy season, and the limited knowledge of farmers, but great opportunities arise from the development of swamp buffalo tourism that can increase people's income and welfare. To maximize this potential, collaborative efforts are needed between the community, the government, and related parties to overcome obstacles and promote sustainable cultivation practices. The recommendations given are increasing education and training for farmers, as well as developing infrastructure that supports optimal ecotourism management.
